Frequently Asked Questions

What is High Speed and Why Do I Need It?

A Dialup Modem has a potential speed of 56K, but most users get much less. A user in town, close to the phone office may get 48K. However, a rural user may only get 24K. A high speed connection, for viewing today’s web pages, is considered 256K or higher. The more complicated the display and interactions of the page, the more critical it is to have high speed connections. Pages with just text load quickly. If the page contains pictures and graphics, it will take longer to transfer that information to you and therefore take longer to display. A high speed connection will reduce these problems. Users may also find short video clips and movie trailers on a web site. To view the video continuously, without stops or downloading it takes an exceptionally high speed.

What determines how fast a web page loads?

There are four major things that allow fast loading. One is the speed of your connection to the main backbone of the Internet. That is our service to you. Did you select 256K, 1M, or 3M? Second is the amount of traffic on the Internet at a particular time. Saturday or Sunday morning will have very little traffic, while a weekday evening in the winter may be very busy. Third is the web site that you are loading. What are it's capabilities and how many users are requesting to view it? If there is predicted blizzard and you go to a weather site, it will probably load very slowly at that time. Fourth is the speed and memory in your personal machine. Having at least a 500 MHz processor and 256 MB RAM will allow it to process information reasonably well when it comes to your machine.

How Does Cloudburst9 Wireless Work?

We currently have radios in Keota, Washington, Sigourney, Kalona, Brighton, and Atalissa. The signal reaches 7-10 miles from each community, depending on the terrain, trees and buildings. Most places within 1/2 mile of the radio can receive a good signal even in low areas or through trees. After a mile, line of site is necessary. There needs to be a clear path between our radio and where we can put an antenna on your home. A signal test will need to be done. Then, we install an antenna on your home or business. A cable connects the antenna to a card in your computer. The antenna will send and receive the signal. Our radio will recognize you as a user by MAC address (a unique number on your hardware).
As a user, you have unlimited online service. Your phone line is not used, so you can answer calls when online and do not need a separate phone line. Your computer is always connected, so there is no wait time when you are ready to use the Internet.

Can more than one computer or a wireless laptop computer be used?

A router or wireless router can be connected to your antenna. Then, you can connect more than one computer, either wired to the router or wirelessly through your home. This equipment will have an additional charge. Any computers under one account will share the bandwidth when used at the same time.

What if my family spends months at another residence?

If you will not be using your Internet connection for 2 months or more, you may request to go on vacation rate. Vacation rate is allowed 1 time per year for a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 6 months. Your profile will be kept and email account will remain active. The cost is $5 per month. A 1 year prepay account would have their year extended equal to the number of months that are inactive. You may still access your Cloudburst9 email account from a web based mail service, such as "Web2mail". You can disconnect your computer from the antenna and take the computer with you. When you return, you will need to contact us to activate your antenna. There will be a reconnect charge of $20.

Where is Cloudburst9 Available?

As of March 2008, the signal is available in and surrounding Keota, Washington, Sigourney, Kalona, Brighton, and Atalissa. A site survey will be done to determine signal strength. Flat, high areas or farmsteads with a tall structure will be able to receive the signal best. The higher the elevation of your home or the location for an antenna the better the signal. Clear line of sight is necessary for the best signal possible.
